Squirrel Sculpture

2025

Copper wire, yarn, hot glue

6 × 8 × 2 inches

I created this sculpture in my Intro to Sculpture class at the University of Washington. I focused on highlighting aspects of a squirrel I find unique, such as their distinctive fluffy tails and round eyes. I enjoyed playing with wire to make 3D shapes, and I intentionally left the wire making up the squirrel’s body sparse to highlight the space in between the solidity of the wire. To make the tail, I wrapped the skeletal frame in yarn and then cut the loops apart. I then separated the strands, causing the yarn to become frizzy and spacious.

Over the course of this project I found myself noticing the many squirrels that live around campus. I’d often stop and we’d stare at each other, which led me to notice even more details I wanted to include.
