Strawberry Basket Carrier
2026
E-flute cardboard
12 × 4.5 × 4.5 inches
I designed and constructed this strawberry plant carrier for my Design Foundations class at the University of Washington. I had to follow this design brief:
Design a beautiful, functional carrier to hold one or two plants and protect them during transport/delivery to a customer's home.
Your design must carry one or two plants in 4" square compostable pots.
You may use up to four separate pieces of single-wall corrugated cardboard.
All pieces must fit within a 16 x 32 sheet of cardboard (8 X 16 at 1/2 scale).
After many iterations, my final design uses two separate pieces of cardboard that fold slot together.
The first piece folds to create the box body, which stays together using hidden extended interlocking tabs on the middle and upper portion of the box sides. There is a semicircle cut out on the box edge, to allow for easy hand access to the plant. On two sides, the box body has extending pieces that act as the handle bars.
The second piece of cardboard creates the handle strap and handle bars. These handle bars mirror the handle bar pieces connected to the base of the box, except that they have extra cardboard that extends outwards and wraps and slots into cutouts in the first handle bars. The doubled up cardboard adds strength to the handles.
The box is simple, concise, and easy to hold. I am proud that the plant is smoothly removed from the pot, and I love how the edges of the box connect (that portion took a lot of time to perfect!!). I am also very happy with the design of the handles, I find that the folded element adds visual interest and looks clean.
